Thing 23 - The End

I can't believe that I actually finished all 23 things. When I first read about the challenge I thought okay this sounds interesting, but then I looked at it and said no way this is much too complicated for me. My branch manager challenged our branch to take on the challenge, so I signed up. What a wealth of knowledge is out there that I had no idea about. Some of the "things" I really didn't like or feel that I would have any use for, like technorati, or social bookmarking. Others I thought were great like the Web Apps, Library Thing and World Cat. Overall I would say it was very worthwhile to take on the challenge and finish it. It was a great team building tool for our branch as well. We were all working together to help each other when we were stuck and everyone was rooting for each other to finish. Thanks for giving us the Challenge.

Listen NJ - Thing 22

I went to Listen NJ, which is really not new for me. I had some training when the library first started using Listen NJ so I was pretty familiar with it. After much trouble I downloaded my book and listened to some of it. It really is a pretty amazing service that we offer to the public, especially in this age of MP3 players.

Podcasts - Thing 21

I went to podcast.com looked around searched for podcasts but nothing really caught my interest. I then did a google search and came up with the podcast sites for MSNBC & CNN. I was able to watch and listen to the first hour of the Today Show from this morning. Very nice thing. CNN updates every hour so instead of just reading the breaking news you can hear it too. Very good.

You Tube - Thing 20

I watched the video on the history of youtube and those guys were really clever to think of something like this.

I searched youtube which I have done before and I came across this video when I typed dance in the subject. I thought this video was really neat to watch and the song was good as well.

Web 2.0 Awards - Thing 19

Well, I looked through the Web 2.0 awards, a lot were not of any interest to me, but I did pull up Pandora and was listening. I did enjoy the music that they played. I put my favorite artist in as Rod Stewart and they just kept the music coming with all songs that I enjoyed.

The web 2.0 award that I really like was Onesentence.org. I pulled it up because it looked rather interesting and I was hooked. I couldn't stop reading the one sentence stories. Some were sad, some were funny and some didn't make sense but I was addicted. I will definitely keep on reading that one.

Web Apps - Thing 18

Wow, that is really cool. I think that this is definitely something I will use. I do think that it can be helpful in the branch for typing meeting notes up that need approval before they are sent out so it can be easily edited. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Sandbox

Well, that was pretty fun. I added a link to my blog which was pretty easy to do. I only needed a little bit of help but just to make sure that I was doing it right.

This wiki seemed a little bit easier than the ones I looked at for Thing 16. I think that using Wikis like this could be beneficial for work on committees or like the Albany County Library uses it for policies and procedures with their staff.

Wikis

I visited the Library Success wiki and I found it a little bit confusing. I did find the recommended link and it was pretty neat to see what people post for recommending titles. It might be something that I would use in the future.

I also looked over the Ocean County Library article on Wikipedia, overall it was very interesting. I looked into the history tab and after clicking a lot of different buttons I found where the changes were.

The video at the beginning of this "thing" made wikis seem very simple and gave a very good explanation but looking at real wikis it doesn't look so easy.

Thing 15

I read most of the perspectives on Library 2.0, and I found the "Into a new world of Librarianship" very interesting. I thought it really made sense how he describes the most important traits of the librarian 2.0. There are so many different things that have to be thought about and taken into consideration and the librarian 2.0 has them all.

What Library 2.0 means to me is that libraries are not just books anymore. I know that we haven't been just books for a long time now but it just proves that you don't even need the "building" anymore to conduct library business.

Technorati

I looked around this website and searched Library 2.0. I found a lot of different blogs but nothing that really impressed me. I don't think that I will have any use for this web site. Maybe I'm just not searching it correctly. :)

del.icio.us

Well, I must say that del.icio.us did not impress me. I understand the concept but I don't think that I would have any use for it. I do utilize my favorites but I don't have as many as some people so I only save what is most important to me.

WorldCat

Wow, what an exciting resourse to use. It will definitely be helpful when searching for items patrons want that we don't own.

NetLibrary

I felt that NetLibrary was very easy to use. It is pretty self explanatory and I have helped patrons sign up for it in the past. Since I've spent a little more time now exploring it, I will be able to give the patron a little extra help if needed.

Library Thing

The link to my Library Thing catalog is: http://www.librarything.com/catalog/curlyloxx

Library thing seems like a very helpful tool to keep track of what you've read and what you are waiting to read. Now I just have to remember all the books that I've read so I can catalog them.
Very interesting and will be very fun to play around with.

technology

I think that technology is a great invention. Having a computer and the internet makes life so much easier, from typing a paper in word to looking up a zip code online. There are so many interesting things that you can do with a computer - especially if you take the time to really learn and play.

Finding Feeds

Well, I've checked out the web sites you offered for finding feeds, and I must say that I am more confused now then I was then. I find it much easier to just subscribe to the feed through the actual web site, but I do understand that this is finding feeds that you might not know are out there. I will keep playing.

RSS Feeds

Well, I've managed to subscribe to 10 news feeds. I ranged from the weather channel to local newspapers, to cosmopolitan magazine. I think that this will make life a little easier, I'll be able to just go to one web site to pull up the latest news and information rather than go to each individual web site. We shall see if I actually do it though. I will try. :)

This is a clock in my branch that I look at all day to see when it's time to go home. :)

I uploaded a picture of a house I'm helping my friend build. This is what it looked like on 3/1/08.

7 1/2 Habits

The easist habit for me is PLAY because even though you are learning you have fun doing it.

The hardest habit for me is Using Technology to your advantage. I sometimes get a little bit intimidated by trying new technology. Once I learn it I'm fine but it's starting out that is scary for me.
